MCPS Countywide Art Show at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda (Photos)

Here are some of the exhibits displayed during the recent Montgomery County Public Schools Countywide Art Show at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The schools represented at the show included Ashburton Elementary School in Bethesda, Candlewood Elementary School in Derwood, and Germantown Elementary School. MCPS uses the annual art show to represent student talents, and illustrate the goals of its Visual Arts curriculum. "The visual arts promote the core competencies - Academic Excellence, Creative Problem-solving, and Social Emotional Learning - identified by MCPS as essential to prepare students for success in the 21st century," the school system explained in a description displayed alongside the artwork.

Rio Lakefront to repurpose sculpture for Copper Canyon Grill plaza update

Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg is planning to repurpose a sculpture it originally commissioned for temporary use in 2016 as a new public art installation on the plaza outside Copper Canyon Grill, located at 100 Boardwalk Place. The restaurant is adding a dining pier, and making several smaller changes to its building area as part of that project. Dan Figueroa of property owner Peterson Cos. wrote in a memo to the City of Gaithersburg that the sculpture will serve as the focal point of the updated plaza.

The bronze Barton Rubenstein sculpture will be installed on a black granite base, with upward-directed lighting beneath it. Installation of the new public art feature will be completed by spring of 2024, with the go-ahead from the city's Cultural Arts Advisory Committee.

New mural in the Kentlands

A new public art mural has been painted at Kentlands Market Square in Gaithersburg. It features images inspired by tenant Berries & Bowls. The superfood cafe is located at 120 Market Street.

SCULPTURE DEDICATED AT DOWNTOWN CROWN (PHOTOS)

Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman and other city officials took part in the dedication of a new piece of public art in Downtown Crown yesterday. Amid frigid temperatures, they welcomed Inner Being, a 750-pound bronze sculpture by St. Louis-Missouri artist Charles Strain - and the 24th piece of public art in the city of Gaithersburg.

At over 8 feet tall, Inner Being was designed to reflect a spirit of innovation and community that the developers of Crown Farm sought the development's design to embody.

Strain was in attendance at the dedication, still putting the finishing touches on the display.
