Sweat Houz to open Kentlands location

Sweat Houz is coming soon to Kentlands Market Square in Gaithersburg. It will be located at 107 Market Street. Sweat Houz is a contrast therapy studio offering treatments like an infrared sauna, cold plunge, and something they call a "Vitamin C Shower." If you can't wait to find out what that is, Sweat Houz has an existing location at Pike & Rose in Rockville.

Back Nine indoor golf simulator opening in Germantown

What is it about golf and Germantown? You would think golf companies would be after the country club champions of Bethesda and Chevy Chase. But Topgolf chose Germantown as its first Montgomery County location. Now the Germantown golf action is moving indoors, with Back Nine. The indoor golf simulator chain has leased a space at 13052 Middlebrook Road, at the Germantown Commons shopping center. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.

Chick-Fil-A opening in Clarksburg Thursday

Chick-Fil-A will hold a grand opening of its new location in Clarksburg tomorrow, Thursday, September 24, 2026. The restaurant is located at 22675 Clarksburg Road, at the Clarksburg Premium Outlets mall off I-270. It will open at 6:00 AM Thursday. Anyone who visits the restaurant on opening day dressed in cow spots can redeem one free entrée (some restrictions apply) or kid’s meal inside the restaurant or in the drive-thru.

Wonder food hall now open in Gaithersburg

Wonder food hall is now open at 124 Main Street in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg. The hybrid food hall and ghost kitchen offers multiple cuisines with celebrity chef branding on one menu. This is the third Montgomery County location to open, if I am counting correctly. A fourth is under construction in Burtonsville. With the heavy cash burn of rapid expansion, it will be interesting to see if this is the next Starbucks, or the next WeWork or Slapfish.

Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen opens in Gaithersburg

Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen opened with a ribbon-cutting yesterday at 212 Boardwalk Place at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg. The dining room was packed this evening. Specialties include fresh breads, handmade mezze, Lamb Mouzat, Farrouj, and Kareem's signature hummus, which is prepared from scratch in a three-day process. 

"I'm proud to bring Kareem's to Maryland and share the food, traditions and hospitality that have been part of my family for generations," Chef Rachid Eido said in a statement. "Lebanese hospitality is about more than serving a meal. It is about opening your table, sharing generously and making people feel like they belong. That is what we want every guest to experience when they come to Kareem's."

Sheetz opens second Gaithersburg location

Sheetz is now open at 793 S. Frederick Avenue (MD 355) at the Walnut Hill Shopping Center in Gaithersburg. This is the second Montgomery County location for the convenience store and mega gas station chain. The store model used in the County is smaller than the ones I've been in on the road elsewhere. Sheetz expedited development of this second Gaithersburg location after the first, at 751 Progress Way, quickly proved to be a financial success. This one is convenient to the Rockville and Derwood areas.

Whip Clean Car Wash opens in Gaithersburg

Whip Clean Car Wash is now open at 391 Muddy Branch Road, at the Festival at Muddy Branch shopping center in Gaithersburg. You can go through for a single wash at a la carte pricing, or sign up to save with a membership. The results have been impressive, based on the photos posted online by the first customers so far. Operating hours are 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Saturday, and 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sundays.

Millie's Ice Cream opening in Gaithersburg

Millie's Ice Cream is coming soon to Gaithersburg. It will be located at 202 Ellington Boulevard at Downtown Crown, next to El Güero Mexicano. Co-founder Chad Townsend, launched the Pittsburgh-based chain with the impulse purchase of a Paco-Jet™ machine. Flavors include standbys like Chad's Vanilla, and seasonal varieties like this summer's Root Beer Float. Today, the Paco-Jet has been replaced by their manufacturing facility at Homestead, Pennsylvania, that supplies all locations.

Exclusive Bashes Balloon Bar opening at Gaithersburg Square

A Germantown small business is expanding into a bricks-and-mortar space in Gaithersburg. Exclusive Bashes Balloon Bar is opening soon at 536 N. Frederick Avenue at Gaithersburg Square. Exclusive Bashes has specialized not in the party balloon animal business that might come to mind, but in fancy balloon arrangements for even the most upscale events, and in event planning. They can handle anything from parties to big weddings and corporate events. When it opens, look for Exclusive Bashes next to the AT&T store.

Orange Pocket opening at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg

Orange Pocket is coming to Gaithersburg later this summer. The Asian variety store chain has leased a space at 30 Grand Corner Avenue at Rio Lakefront. Specializing in products imported from, or inspired by, Japan and South Korea, you might expect this to be a China-based chain like competitors who have recently arrived in Montgomery County. But Orange Pocket is actually based in Texas, like many other smart companies these days.

What does "Orange Pocket" mean? The company only describes it as "a small space packed with big finds." Those finds include blind boxes, Labubu toys, anime figurines, plush toys, sought-after Japanese and South Korean cosmetics and beauty products, house and kitchen wares, stationary, pet products, and Asian snacks. Customers can also pass the time playing the claw and Bandai Gashapon machines. Orange Pocket is currently promising an August opening.

Hobby Lobby opens in Gaithersburg

Hobby Lobby is now open at 15750 Shady Grove Road at the 270 Center on the border of Gaithersburg with Rockville. This is the first Hobby Lobby store to open in Montgomery County. Right when you enter the vestibule, you are greeted with displays of decor and furniture that are currently on-sale. Operating hours for Hobby Lobby are 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Saturday. The store is closed Sundays "to allow employees time for family and worship."

J. Crew Factory to open at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg

J. Crew Factory is coming soon to Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg. The outlet arm of the preppy apparel brand has posted signage in the storefront windows at 20-A Grand Corner Avenue. J. Crew Factory will open in "Winter 2026," according to the signage. Very similar to Gap Factory, J. Crew Factory is not a liquidation outlet of past-prime J. Crew clothing, instead carrying a line of clothing designed specifically for Factory stores. 

What's the difference? Mostly in the materials used. They're going to be lower-quality but also much lower priced. The genuine wool sweater or scarf you might buy at J. Crew, for example, could be made of synthetic fabrics at Factory stores. So it's a way to get J. Crew styling for less, but the pieces might not last you as long as The Real Thing. How can you immediately recognize a Factory item on the resale market? J. Crew Factory items will have two tiny diamonds or dots on the brand label.

Burlington sets opening date for Montgomery Village store

We now have an opening date for the new Burlington store at 19142 Montgomery Village Avenue at the Montgomery Village Center. The store is now scheduled to open on April 24, 2026, just in time to shop for your summer wardrobe. Burlington is replacing Big Lots at the center. I was sad about the closure of Big Lots, but Burlington is an excellent replacement, and better than I expected.

Koi Sushi opens in Gaithersburg

Koi Sushi is now open at 201 Boardwalk Place at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg. Look for it next to Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls. It has already racked up a perfect 5-star rating on Google Reviews. The opening of Koi Sushi was first reported by The MoCo Show.

Kitchen Social coming soon to Gaithersburg

Kitchen Social is coming soon to Gaithersburg. It is taking over the large space at 203 Crown Park Avenue at Downtown Crown. Kitchen Social has a large presence in the great state of Ohio, and one location in the Sunshine State. This will be its first restaurant in the Mid-Atlantic region. The chain is known for its menu of global cuisine, and its signature Cheddar Scallion Biscuits with honey butter. Kitchen Social is expected to open this summer.

Hommali Thai Dining opening Wednesday in Gaithersburg

Hommali Thai Dining is opening tomorrow, Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 614 Quince Orchard Road at Quince Orchard Plaza in Gaithersburg. The restaurant's name is the Thai phrase, "Thai Jasmine rice," and refers to the aroma of it. A soft, non-glutinous rice, Hom Mali rice is most often used in grilled, stir-fried, and braised dishes, as well as in soups. Hommali is operating on soft-opening hours today and tonight, according to the restaurant.

Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen opening in Gaithersburg

Here's a positive "Florida Man" news report: Chef Rachid Eido is expanding his Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen franchise to Maryland. It will be at the Rio Lakefront development in Gaithersburg, at 212 Boardwalk Place. That's next to IT'SUGAR. Eido is actually a native of Beirut, where he learned the art of authentic Lebanese cooking, with the flavors, aromatic spices, and warm hospitality it is known for.

Rowan opens at Downtown Crown in Gaithersburg

Rowan has opened at 126 Crown Park Avenue at Downtown Crown in Gaithersburg. The piercing studio is located between Ideal Image and Bath & Body Works. All piercing procedures at Rowan are hypoallergenic and performed by licensed nurses. Rowan has an existing Montgomery County location at the Shoppes of Bethesda.

Guapo's to open new Gaithersburg restaurant

Guapo's is opening a new restaurant in Gaithersburg. It will be a Guapo's Rotisserie Chicken & Tex Mex Grill concept, of which the local company operates three in Northern Virginia. This would be the first on our side of the Potomac. Guapo's has full-service Mexican restaurants in Bethesda, and at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg.

Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken is the specialty at the Guapo's Rotisserie Chicken locations. The new restaurant will be located at 12211 Darnestown Road, at the Quince Orchard Marketplace shopping center. That was formerly home to California Tortilla.

Song Dog Farm Distillery opens in Boyds (Photos)

Song Dog Farm Distillery has opened at 18100 Bucklodge Road in Boyds, Maryland. The distillery is located on a farm property in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve, and includes a tasting room, a "front porch" outdoor patio, and expansive lawns. Song Dog Spirits was founded in 2015 by the husband and wife team of Megan Draheim and David Harris, who purchased the farm in 2021, and constructed the facilities over the past four years. 

There is a tasting room menu, and food is also available from food trucks on-site, or you can bring your own. Kids and "well-behaved" dogs are also welcomed on the premises. Song Dog produces bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, gin, and seasonal liqueurs, and all of their products reflect the agricultural produce and flavors of Maryland. Operating hours are 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday through Friday, 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
