Hobby Lobby opens in Gaithersburg

Hobby Lobby is now open at 15750 Shady Grove Road at the 270 Center on the border of Gaithersburg with Rockville. This is the first Hobby Lobby store to open in Montgomery County. Right when you enter the vestibule, you are greeted with displays of decor and furniture that are currently on-sale. Operating hours for Hobby Lobby are 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Saturday. The store is closed Sundays "to allow employees time for family and worship."

J. Crew Factory to open at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg

J. Crew Factory is coming soon to Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg. The outlet arm of the preppy apparel brand has posted signage in the storefront windows at 20-A Grand Corner Avenue. J. Crew Factory will open in "Winter 2026," according to the signage. Very similar to Gap Factory, J. Crew Factory is not a liquidation outlet of past-prime J. Crew clothing, instead carrying a line of clothing designed specifically for Factory stores. 

What's the difference? Mostly in the materials used. They're going to be lower-quality but also much lower priced. The genuine wool sweater or scarf you might buy at J. Crew, for example, could be made of synthetic fabrics at Factory stores. So it's a way to get J. Crew styling for less, but the pieces might not last you as long as The Real Thing. How can you immediately recognize a Factory item on the resale market? J. Crew Factory items will have two tiny diamonds or dots on the brand label.

Burlington sets opening date for Montgomery Village store

We now have an opening date for the new Burlington store at 19142 Montgomery Village Avenue at the Montgomery Village Center. The store is now scheduled to open on April 24, 2026, just in time to shop for your summer wardrobe. Burlington is replacing Big Lots at the center. I was sad about the closure of Big Lots, but Burlington is an excellent replacement, and better than I expected.

Koi Sushi opens in Gaithersburg

Koi Sushi is now open at 201 Boardwalk Place at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg. Look for it next to Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls. It has already racked up a perfect 5-star rating on Google Reviews. The opening of Koi Sushi was first reported by The MoCo Show.

Kitchen Social coming soon to Gaithersburg

Kitchen Social is coming soon to Gaithersburg. It is taking over the large space at 203 Crown Park Avenue at Downtown Crown. Kitchen Social has a large presence in the great state of Ohio, and one location in the Sunshine State. This will be its first restaurant in the Mid-Atlantic region. The chain is known for its menu of global cuisine, and its signature Cheddar Scallion Biscuits with honey butter. Kitchen Social is expected to open this summer.

Hommali Thai Dining opening Wednesday in Gaithersburg

Hommali Thai Dining is opening tomorrow, Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 614 Quince Orchard Road at Quince Orchard Plaza in Gaithersburg. The restaurant's name is the Thai phrase, "Thai Jasmine rice," and refers to the aroma of it. A soft, non-glutinous rice, Hom Mali rice is most often used in grilled, stir-fried, and braised dishes, as well as in soups. Hommali is operating on soft-opening hours today and tonight, according to the restaurant.

Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen opening in Gaithersburg

Here's a positive "Florida Man" news report: Chef Rachid Eido is expanding his Kareem's Lebanese Kitchen franchise to Maryland. It will be at the Rio Lakefront development in Gaithersburg, at 212 Boardwalk Place. That's next to IT'SUGAR. Eido is actually a native of Beirut, where he learned the art of authentic Lebanese cooking, with the flavors, aromatic spices, and warm hospitality it is known for.

Rowan opens at Downtown Crown in Gaithersburg

Rowan has opened at 126 Crown Park Avenue at Downtown Crown in Gaithersburg. The piercing studio is located between Ideal Image and Bath & Body Works. All piercing procedures at Rowan are hypoallergenic and performed by licensed nurses. Rowan has an existing Montgomery County location at the Shoppes of Bethesda.

Guapo's to open new Gaithersburg restaurant

Guapo's is opening a new restaurant in Gaithersburg. It will be a Guapo's Rotisserie Chicken & Tex Mex Grill concept, of which the local company operates three in Northern Virginia. This would be the first on our side of the Potomac. Guapo's has full-service Mexican restaurants in Bethesda, and at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg.

Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken is the specialty at the Guapo's Rotisserie Chicken locations. The new restaurant will be located at 12211 Darnestown Road, at the Quince Orchard Marketplace shopping center. That was formerly home to California Tortilla.

Song Dog Farm Distillery opens in Boyds (Photos)

Song Dog Farm Distillery has opened at 18100 Bucklodge Road in Boyds, Maryland. The distillery is located on a farm property in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve, and includes a tasting room, a "front porch" outdoor patio, and expansive lawns. Song Dog Spirits was founded in 2015 by the husband and wife team of Megan Draheim and David Harris, who purchased the farm in 2021, and constructed the facilities over the past four years. 

There is a tasting room menu, and food is also available from food trucks on-site, or you can bring your own. Kids and "well-behaved" dogs are also welcomed on the premises. Song Dog produces bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, gin, and seasonal liqueurs, and all of their products reflect the agricultural produce and flavors of Maryland. Operating hours are 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday through Friday, 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Sixty Vines opens in Gaithersburg

Sixty Vines has opened at 212 Ellington Boulevard at Downtown Crown in Gaithersburg. "The winemaker's restaurant" is now the wine drinker's restaurant. Your choice of sixty wines will be poured from the restaurant's "sustainable wine on tap system." Sixty Vines replaces Pour House at the development.

Charley: A Chesapeake Chophouse & Bar opening today in Gaithersburg

Charley: A Chesapeake Chophouse & Bar is opening today, Thursday, October 9, 2025 in Gaithersburg. It is located at 9811 Washingtonian Boulevard at Rio Lakefront. The restaurant has dropped its original name, Charley Prime Foods, and has switched concepts from American cuisine to steaks and seafood. At the bar, the headliner is now the Orange Crush, to fit the restaurant's new mantra that "Summer never ends at Charley."

Onekick Martial Arts sets opening date at Kentlands Market Square

Onekick Martial Arts now has an opening date at Kentlands Market Square in Gaithersburg. The studio will open on Thursday, October 16, 2025. A ribbon-cutting will be held at 12:00 PM that day. Onekick Martial Arts is located at 255 Kentlands Boulevard.

Damascus to "welcome" first marijuana dispensary in town, right next to Jimmie Cone

The town of Damascus is getting its first licensed marijuana dispensary. It will be located at 26400 Ridge Road (Route 27), right next door to Jimmie Cone. Damascus has a couple of smoke shops, but this will be the first licensed dispensary in town. Montgomery County and Maryland elected officials are all-in, all-in on smoking pot, and even the federal government is pondering legalization, leading one to wonder why failing government officials so very badly want their constituents to be on mind-altering drugs that can lead to cognitive disfunction, psychosis, and impaired brain development. Hmm. The Damascus dispensary is expected to open by early 2026.

Sula Latin Market opens in Gaithersburg

Sula Latin Market has opened at 122 E. Diamond Avenue in Olde Towne Gaithersburg. Just ignore the "coming soon" banner on the building. The Latin grocery store is located right across the street from Cancun Mexican Cuisine. Operating hours for the supermarket are 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, seven days a week.

AH'HAAN by Bangkok Garden opening August 17 in Gaithersburg

AH'HAAN by Bangkok Garden has set an opening date of August 17, 2025 at 237-A Kentlands Boulevard in Gaithersburg. That is the former Good Fortune Cafe space, next to Supertooth. As you can see in the photo below, they will be serving Singha beer, "Thailand's original and best-loved premium beer since 1933." During the first week of operation, the Thai restaurant will be offering 20%-off your total bill if you agree to post a Google review of your dining experience - good, bad, or ugly. Ask your server for the review link when you have finished eating. The offer applies to both dine-in and takeout customers, and is good through August 24, 2025.

Hobby Lobby to open in Gaithersburg

Hobby Lobby is planning to open its first store in Montgomery County. It will be at 15750 Shady Grove Road in the 270 Center, on the border of Gaithersburg and Rockville. That is the former Best Buy space. Hobby Lobby will take advantage of the big box building dimensions, and the immediate access to I-270 just west of the shopping center.

Hobby Lobby was founded by David Green in 1972, initially operating out of a garage with a $600 loan to create miniature picture frames. The success of these frames, which could be sold to larger retailers, allowed Green to open the first Hobby Lobby store in Oklahoma City in 1972. The company's growth was fueled by its focus on providing a wide array of craft and hobby supplies at competitive prices, coupled with a strong emphasis on customer service. Similar to Chick-fil-A, Hobby Lobby followed a practice of closing its stores on Sundays. Their strategy resonated with a broad customer base, enabling steady expansion across the United States.

The Hobby Lobby concept centers on offering a vast selection of arts, crafts, and home decor items under one roof, catering to a diverse range of creative interests and decorating styles. Their merchandise typically includes framing supplies, floral and wedding décor, fabric, jewelry making components, scrapbooking materials, and various craft supplies for painting, drawing, and needlework. Miniso opens in Germantown

Miniso has opened at 19745 Frederick Road, in the Fox Chapel Center in Germantown. The Japanese-inspired Chinese lifestyle goods chain offers toys, health and organization products. Some characters are licensed, like Marvel and Coca-Cola, while others are original intellectual property of the growing international company. You may find stuffed animals or pillows in one aisle, kitchenware or fitness equipment in the next, and face masks and hand sanitizer in yet another.
